Base de datos MaFiMed relacionada con el pensamiento de José Martí y de Fidel Castro sobre temas de medicina y de salud / MaFiMed database related to the thought of José Martí and Fidel Castro about medicine and health topics

Las bases de datos se derivan de la necesidad de disponer de información sintetizada y así minimizar los tiempos del acceso a datos de interés temáticos. En el ámbito de la medicina, la búsqueda y la recuperación de material documental en bases de datos de información médica resulta un ejercicio complejo que lleva tiempo, a causa de la saturación en la difusión de la producción científica. En Cuba son escasas las iniciativas en tipo de recursos que permitan a los profesionales de la salud obtener una información sobre figuras históricas que en su capacidad intelectual manifestaron criterios y reflexiones sobre la medicina y la salud, como José Martí Pérez y Fidel Castro Ruz. Es objetivo del presente artículo exponer las fases de creación en la Biblioteca Médica Nacional de la base de datos MaFiMed, que recopila el pensamiento de Martí y de Fidel referido a las temáticas médicas y de la salud(AU)

Databases have derived from the need for available synthesized information, thus minimizing the time spent accessing theme data of interest. In the framework of medicine, the search and retrieval of document material from medical information databases is both complex and time-consuming, due to the saturation in the dissemination of scientific production. Few initiatives have been put forth in Cuba concerning resource types enabling health professionals to obtain information about intellectually outstanding historical figures who have stated criteria and reflections about medicine and health, as is the case with José Martí Pérez and Fidel Castro Ruz. The purpose of the present paper is to describe the stages in the development of the MaFiMed database at the National Medical Library. This database is a collection of thoughts by Martí and Fidel about medical and health topics(AU)

Comportamiento de los estudiantes de medicina en la búsqueda de información en Internet / Behaviour of medical students in their search for information on the Internet

Con el objetivo de determinar el comportamiento de los alumnos de medicina en la búsqueda de información en Internet, se estudió el uso de las bases de datos y sitios sobre salud disponibles en el portal de Infomed: Medline, Cochrane y la Biblioteca Virtual de Salud de la Red de Salud de Cuba, entre otros. Para esto, se aplicaron 60 encuestas anónimas al azar entre los estudiantes de sexto año de Medicina que utilizaron el servicio de navegación en Internet que ofrece la Biblioteca Médica Nacional. El 58 por ciento de los alumnos encuestados visita la Biblioteca al menos una vez por semana; sin embargo, el 80 por ciento de ellos no consultan o desconocen PubMed. Una situación similar presenta Medline y sólo el 3 por ciento emplea el Mesh Browser para la realización de las búsquedas en este sistema; el 95 por ciento de los estudiantes no emplean la base de datos Cochrane; sólo el 23 por ciento de los encuestados visitó el sitio de la Biblioteca Virtual durante los últimos 6 meses. Existe un manifiesto desconocimiento y subutilización de los recursos de información dispuestos por Infomed entre los usuarios de la Biblioteca, sobre todo si se considera el alto valor y el merecido prestigio internacional de las fuentes referidas. Se necesita de un proceso sistemático de alfabetización en información —desde las etapas tempranas del pregrado— entre los usuarios, de una motivación y un entorno exigente que compulse el uso adecuado de los recursos disponibles en Infomed.

With the objective to determine the behaviour of the medical students who search for information on the Internet, a study was made on the use of health databases and sites available in Infomed: Medline, Cochrane and the Virtual Library of Health of the Cuban Health Network, among others. For this study, 60 anonymous surveys were applied at random among sixth-year medical students that used the service of Internet navigation offered by the National Medical Library. 58 percent of the polled students visit the Library at least once a week; nevertheless, 80 percent of them do not consult or do not know about PubMed; Medline presents a similar situation, and only 3 percent of them use the Mesh Browser for system searches; 95 percent of the students do not make use of the Cochrane database; only 23 percent of the polled students visited the site of the Virtual Library in the last 6 months. There is a manifest ignorance and subutilization of the information resources offered by Infomed among the users of the Library, above all, if the high value and the deserved international prestige of the above-mentioned sources is considered. A systematic process of information literacy is needed - from the early undergraduate stages - among the users, as well as motivation and a demanding environment that lead to the adequate use of the available resources in Infomed.
